This portrait began when Martin entered the room in an attention-grabbing, richly patterned Nigerian suit. I’ve known him personally and professionally for several years, and built the composition around his exuberant presence, using a small cast of objects to hint at the influences that have shaped him: echoes of travel, the tools of his profession, and the intimacy of his home. Sunlight threads through the painting as a visual metaphor for his optimism and can-do attitude. Music is central to Martin’s life: the title nods to Herbie Hancock’s seminal album 'Headhunters'.
