I created this work on six black canvases using ash and charcoal twigs collected from Californian wildfires, applying monochromatic layers by hand. The tones ranged from fine white ash, taken from my burnt oak trunk, to deep black from charred pine twigs.
By erasing the ash, I was able to uncover the black canvases that defined my landscape and revealed a resilient network of trees. The white ash sky contrasts with these forms, emphasizing nature’s beauty and fragility.
The braille symbolizes humanity's blindness to climate change’s destructive power, reducing nature's vibrant colours to ash.
A touch of green at the bottom signifies transformation and growth, reminding us of nature's resilience and cyclic renewal amidst life's transience.
