Eligible for Climate Emergency Prize In the film Fantasia, Disney takes Goethe’s poem “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” and retells the story - to Paul Dukas’ music of the same name - casting Mickey Mouse as the Apprentice who steals his Master’s magical powers, only to lose control of the results he unleashes. Mickey causes an almighty flood that threatens catastrophic consequences, until the Sorcerer returns and puts all things to rights. But in this painting the Sorcerer is dead, because in reality it’s we alone who must solve the crisis we have brought about by playing havoc with the world’s climate. As long as economic growth still involves increasing Co2 emissions, is “keep on growing” wise or simply suicidal?
